Tracy Mattes takes part in a Dolphin Research & Rehabilitation Project in Puerto VallartaOn June 17th, Tracy traveled to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to take part in a Marine Conservation Study which included a Dolphin Research and Rehabilitation project. Every year thousands of dolphins are killed or seriously injured as a result of getting entangled in fishing nets and human leisure boating activities. The focus of the program is to create a greater understanding and appreciation of marine mammals and protecting the environment we share; it also involves rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing captive dolphins back into the freedom of the sea.
"I have such a deep respect and fondness for these beautiful, amazing creatures. I had the opportunity to swim in the ocean with dolphins several years ago and it was truly one of the best experiences of my life. I was thrilled to have the chance to be back in the water with them, although this time it was in a marine center pool. You cannot help but be charmed by their beauty and grace. I have great respect for those trying to save and protect them and all marine life and their environment. While I loved every minute I got to spend swimming and playing with Aztec, (the rescued female bottlenose Dolphin photographed here), these endearing, intelligent creatures were never meant to live in captivity."
Biologists, dolphin experts and marine rescue specialists are working to create rehabilitation programs that prepare dolphins, like Aztec, to be released back to their natural habitats.

She says "the lack of basic knowledge about the need of conservation is a big reason people do harm to their own natural resources, marine life and to the environment. It's inspiring to see people committed to educating people about these issues, in attempts to ensure the well-being of dolphins and the marine environment."
Tracy has always had a feeling for Nature and the living environment, and she has a personal passion and love for animals. She said, "I have had the unique opportunity to travel and to live in some of the most beautiful places around the world. Through these experiences I have come to understand and respect the delicate and essential balance of nature. Also, we grew up with quite a menagerie of animals, most of which I would bring home to care for. It's always been a personal passion of mine. I will always support these causes."
